Traditional spelling lists ask students to memorize words.
Sense of Sound Spelling® teaches students how to SPELL them.

The Complete Sense of Sound Spelling® 13-Unit Bundle gives you 59 weeks of explicit, systematic, phonics-aligned spelling instruction designed specifically for upper elementary students.

No random word lists.
No Monday-memorize, Friday-test, Monday-forget cycle.
No wondering what spelling skill you should teach next.

Instead, students learn to hear the sounds in words, understand the patterns that represent those sounds, recognize meaningful word parts, and apply what they know to actually encode words.

And because upper elementary students don’t all need to start in the same place, you don’t have to.

Assess your students. Identify the gaps. Start where THEY need.

This complete bundle gives you the tools to meet students where they are while providing a clear progression of skills that builds from foundational phonics patterns to increasingly sophisticated spelling, syllable, and morphological concepts.

⏱ JUST 10–12 MINUTES A DAY

Sense of Sound Spelling® was created to give teachers high-impact spelling instruction without taking over the literacy block.

Each unit follows a predictable, teacher-friendly routine so you aren’t reinventing spelling instruction every week.

Students move beyond simply studying a list and instead listen, analyze, manipulate, read, write, and apply the patterns they’re learning.

Depending on the unit, resources include:

✔️ Daily structured lesson plans
✔️ Explicit phoneme and spelling-rule instruction
✔️ Teacher reference charts
✔️ Student sound-spelling charts
✔️ Word sorts
✔️ Decodable/controlled reading practice
✔️ Real and nonsense word analysis
✔️ Syllable work
✔️ Morphology instruction
✔️ Word matrices & word sums
✔️ Vocabulary connections
✔️ Sentence-level encoding
✔️ Paragraph-level writing
✔️ Interactive games and review activities
✔️ End-of-unit assessments
✔️ Student data-tracking tools
✔️ Cumulative review opportunities

📊 ASSESS. TEACH. CHECK. RESPOND.

One of the most important pieces of Sense of Sound Spelling® is that your data actually tells you what to do next.

Instead of giving every student the same list because it’s “Week 14,” you’ll be able to see:

What patterns have students mastered?
Where are the gaps?
Who needs reteaching?
Who needs small-group support?
Who is ready to move forward?

Built-in assessments and cumulative Sound Blitz review weeks help you continually spiral previously taught skills while identifying patterns that need additional instruction.

Your spelling instruction becomes responsive instead of random.

🔤 FROM SOUNDS → PATTERNS → SYLLABLES → MORPHEMES

Upper elementary spelling can’t stop at basic phonics.

As students progress through Sense of Sound Spelling®, they learn that spelling is connected to sound, syllable structure, morphology, vocabulary, and meaning.

Students encounter concepts such as the 1-1-1 doubling rule, dropping and changing rules, consonant-le syllables, and increasingly complex spelling patterns.

Later instruction expands into advanced patterns and word structure, including -age, -us/-ous, -able/-ible, -cal/-cle, -al/-el, -tion/-sion, -ture, advanced /sh/ spellings, Greek and French influences, prefixes, suffixes, bound roots, and free bases.

That means students aren’t just learning what a word looks like.

They’re learning to understand why it is spelled that way.

💗 DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR UPPER ELEMENTARY

This isn’t a primary phonics program repackaged for older kids.

Sense of Sound Spelling® was intentionally designed for grades 3–6, where one classroom can include students with very different levels of phonics mastery.

The included scope and sequence begins with approximately mid-first-grade phonics concepts so teachers can identify and address gaps in students who are one or two grade levels behind, then progresses into increasingly advanced spelling concepts.

That makes it especially powerful for classrooms where you hear:

“They can read it, but they can’t spell it.”

“Their writing doesn’t match what I know they can say.”

“I don’t even know where their spelling gaps begin.”

Now you do.

WHY TEACHERS LOVE SENSE OF SOUND SPELLING®

✔️ Explicit — Students are actually taught the patterns and rules.

✔️ Systematic — Skills build intentionally rather than appearing randomly on weekly lists.

✔️ Cumulative — Previously learned patterns continue to come back.

✔️ Data-driven — Assessments help determine what students need next.

✔️ Encoding-focused — Students learn how to take the sounds they hear and represent them in print.

✔️ Morphology-connected — As words become more complex, students learn to recognize meaningful word parts.

✔️ Writing-connected — Students apply spelling beyond isolated words.

✔️ Upper-elementary specific — Activities and instruction are designed with older learners in mind.

✔️ Teacher-friendly — Everything is organized so you can open it, teach it, and move on with your literacy block.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do I have to begin with Unit 1?

No! In fact, that’s one of the biggest benefits of the program.

Use your student data and the included scope and sequence to determine where instruction needs to begin. Some students may need foundational patterns while others are ready for more advanced spelling and morphology work.

Is this only for struggling spellers?

No. Sense of Sound Spelling® can be used for whole-group Tier 1 instruction, small groups, or intervention. The progression allows you to provide explicit instruction while responding to the actual needs of your students.

Is this scripted?

It’s structured and explicit, but not robotic. You’ll know what to teach and how to teach it without feeling like you’re reading from a script.

Do I need another spelling curriculum with it?

No. The Complete 13-Unit Bundle provides 55 weeks of spelling instruction, allowing you to use the sequence across more than one school year or select units based on the needs of your students.

Why 59 weeks if a school year is only about 36 weeks?

Because students—not a calendar—should determine your starting point.

The complete bundle gives you the flexibility to assess, select, reteach, differentiate, and continue instruction across grade levels rather than forcing every class through the exact same sequence at the exact same pace. It is also perfect to use in a grade level band. For example, 3rd grade starts with the first 6 units, then 4th grade does the next 7 units with the same group of students.

✨ STOP MEMORIZING. START ENCODING.

Spelling shouldn’t be a list of words students memorize on Thursday night and forget by Monday.

Give students the tools to hear it, analyze it, understand it, and spell it.

13 units. 59 weeks. 10–12 minutes a day.
One complete upper-elementary spelling system designed to help you assess & start where your students need.
