Sense of Sound Spelling® – Units 3-4 and Sound Blitz DIGITAL DOWNLOAD
Sense of Sound Spelling® teaches students how to encode words by sound, pattern, and structure.
This 9-Week Bundle includes Units 3–4 plus a cumulative Sound Blitz review week, giving you 9 full weeks of explicit, engaging, and data-driven spelling instruction rooted in the Science of Reading.
Students continue moving beyond memorized spelling lists and learn:
- How sounds are represented by different spelling patterns
- How to recognize and apply those patterns in unfamiliar words
- How morphology connects spelling, meaning, and vocabulary
- How to transfer spelling knowledge into sentences and authentic writing
Each unit follows a predictable, teacher-friendly structure with approximately 10 minutes of instruction per day, explicit phoneme instruction, hands-on application, morphology connections, writing, review, and assessment.
WHAT’S INCLUDED – UNITS 3–4 + SOUND BLITZ
✔️ Unit 3 (Weeks 10–13)
Unit 3 expands students' encoding knowledge with vowel patterns, consonant blends, and Bossy R patterns.
Phoneme focuses include:
- Week 10: OA, OE
- Week 11: STR, SPL, SCR, SPR
- Week 12: SHR, THR, SQU
- Week 13: Bossy R — ER, UR, IR
Students aren't simply learning which words contain these patterns—they're learning to recognize, read, encode, manipulate, and apply them across increasingly complex words and writing.
Includes activities and resources such as:
- Daily structured lesson plans
- Explicit phoneme rules & student reference charts
- Connected reading passages with phoneme highlighting
- Teacher-led and student word sorts
- Pocket sorts
- Guided sentence writing
- Morphology connections
- Building polymorphemic words
- Writing mini-paragraphs using focus patterns
- Syntax and sentence-editing practice
- Interactive review games
- Weekly checks
- End-of-unit assessment
For example, Week 10 moves students from a connected-text introduction and word sort into explicit rule review, guided writing, morphology, paragraph writing, syntax, and assessment—all centered around OA and OE.
✔️ Unit 4 (Weeks 14–17)
Unit 4 continues building students' knowledge of vowel teams while adding contractions and morphology.
Phoneme/morpheme focuses include:
- Week 14: OI, OY
- Week 15: OU, OW
- Week 16: AU, AW
- Week 17: Contractions — AM, IS, HAS, NOT, ARE
Students continue working across reading, encoding, morphology, vocabulary, syntax, and writing rather than practicing spelling patterns in isolation.
Includes activities and resources such as:
- Daily structured lesson plans
- Explicit phoneme rules & student charts
- Connected-text phoneme practice
- Whole-group and independent word sorts
- Phoneme-photo matching
- Guided sentence writing
- Morphology word matrices
- Prefix, base, and suffix exploration
- Paragraph writing
- Interactive games and review activities
- Weekly checks
- End-of-unit assessment
Morphology is intentionally woven into instruction. Students use word matrices to explore how prefixes, bases, and suffixes combine to create word families, connecting spelling to vocabulary and meaning.
✔️ Sound Blitz: Units 3–4 (Week 18)
This is not a filler week. It’s a strategic review and data checkpoint.
After eight weeks of new learning, students spend a full week spiraling back through the patterns from Units 3 and 4 before completing a cumulative assessment.
The week includes:
- Day 1: Anchor Chart Sorting
- Day 2: Sound Sprint review game
- Day 3: Sense of Sound Choice Board
- Day 4: Phomoji Short Stories
- Day 5: Cumulative Assessment + student tracking sheet
Students review all phoneme focuses from Units 3–4 through collaborative sorting, word generation, independent choice activities, writing, and games—not another week of worksheets.
The cumulative assessment and student tracking sheet help teachers pinpoint which patterns students have mastered, which need to be revisited, and which students may need targeted small-group support.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is this scripted?
It’s structured and explicit—but not robotic. You’ll know exactly what to teach and practice each day while still having the flexibility to teach like you.
How much time does it take?
Plan for approximately 10 minutes per day. The lessons are intentionally designed to provide focused, explicit spelling instruction without taking over your literacy block.
Do I need anything else?
The instructional materials are included. Some activities use common classroom supplies such as highlighters, dry-erase markers, student notebooks, coloring materials, whiteboards, timers, or dice.
Do I need to purchase Units 1–2 first?
Units 3–4 are designed as the next 9 weeks in the Sense of Sound Spelling® sequence, building into more complex phoneme patterns, morphology, and application. However, you can give your students the specific dose of spelling they need and just purchase the units you need.
What comes next?
Continue through the Sense of Sound Spelling® sequence as students build an increasingly sophisticated understanding of how sound, spelling, and structure work together.
✨ Stop memorizing. Start encoding.
Give students more than a list of words to remember for Friday.
Give them the tools to understand how English spelling works—and how to apply that knowledge to words they’ve never been asked to memorize.
